Start with how the kitchen is used, not how the showroom sample looks. In the 2026 Houzz study, marble accounted for 3% of upgraded countertop selections nationally, while engineered quartz accounted for 32%. This gap is useful evidence of different buyer preferences but does not prove either material is superior. At AMC we include marble and quartz with custom full-slab options; we will compare the actual marble slab against the exact marble-look quartz product available to order.
Marble is a calcium-carbonate-rich natural stone. Lemon juice, vinegar, tomato sauce, and some cleaners can react with its surface and create etch marks. An etch is a loss or change of polish, not necessarily a stain, and applying sealer does not prevent the chemical reaction. The Natural Stone Institute recommends mild, non-acidic cleaning for calcareous stone. That reality matters to a baker who loves marble’s appearance, a household that frequently cooks acidic foods, and anyone expecting a permanently flawless polished surface. Marble can also develop a patina that some buyers welcome. A quartz lookalike generally offers easier day-to-day cleanup, but it cannot reproduce the singular pattern of a natural slab and it also requires protection from high heat.
Compare costs beyond the starting square-foot price. Ask for material, fabrication, cutouts, edging, sealing if recommended, installation, and any specialty transport to appear on both written quotes. Confirm whether the marble slab’s veins will line up across an island, and whether the installed pieces will come from the same lot. Ask the fabricator about chips along sink cutouts and how repairs would look on the selected finish. With quartz, confirm heat and UV exclusions and whether the chosen design is available in a matching backsplash thickness.
Select real marble if you actively want its natural appearance and accept possible etching and periodic professional refinishing. Select marble-look quartz if your buying priority is low maintenance and a consistent light pattern. AMC has a wide variety of countertops, including quartz, granite, and marble full slabs, stop by and compare at either of our local showrooms – Ft. Collins and Aurora.
